Replacing Judgment With Feedback
Know Thyself School does not institute formal achievement standards. Students may attend a class in any given academic subject, and the class may or may not include evaluation by a teacher. At KTS, self-evaluation is seen as the highest and most meaningful standard by which any student’s areas of study can be measured. When students have the access to discover and pursue their own goals and interests, they natural seek to be successful, and will overcome all obstacles that stand in their way. Internal motivation, i.e., interest, passion, joy, etc., is a much more powerful force than external motivation, i.e., testing, rewards, punishment, etc. When a student’s primary goal is to learn, rather than to perform well on a test, the student is more likely to undertake an activity which offers a challenge, and is less likely to use the fear of failure as justification for avoiding obstacles and therefore missing goals.
